Who We Are

In 1983, a group of educators and children's literature advocates created The Foundation for Children's Books (FCB), a nonprofit, educational organization. Our founders made a commitment to assist the professionals who most directly influence young readers: teachers, librarians, and parents. It is a commitment that we continue today, through innovative programs, workshops, and school visits.

Our Mission

For more than 20 years our mission has endured:

"Good books, properly shared in school and family settings, help children develop a love of reading and learning. Good books also offer an invaluable introduction to language, literacy, values, critical thinking, and cultural diversity."

What We Do

To fulfill our mission, the FCB produces innovative educational programs, workshops and teaching materials for teachers in preschool to grade 8, reading and literacy specialists, librarians, parents, and the public. We place a high priority on serving educators and library staffs in under-resourced school districts.

While our membership base includes teachers, librarians, parents, authors and illustrators, publishers, and children's literature experts in the greater Boston area, the ultimate beneficiaries are the thousands of children directly influenced by the knowledge these individuals gain through FCB programs.

Since 2005, we have increased our commitment to serving children in under-served schools directly through author and illustrator visits and residencies. These programs are funded by individual donations and private foundations.

With the exception of school-based workshops and author visits, all programs are open to the public. The FCB is listed by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a Professional Development Provider for educators.
